Tips on Buying Parrot Cages

If you're considering buying a parrot then you're no doubt wondering which parrot cages are best for your bird. Remember, your parrot's cage is his or her home and the most important item you will purchase for your pet. When buying bird cages there are a few things to consider that will help you make the best choice. We examine some of the most important features.

Parrots are very active birds and require large cages. Usually the largest cage you can afford or find will make the best home for your bird. While a cage in which your bird can stretch his wings horizontally is adequate, bigger parrot cages will allow your bird more room to move around in. This way it can be as active as possible.

Getting sufficient exercise will help keep your bird's heart, muscles, and ligaments healthy and prevent it from becoming too fat. Parrots, and in particular, Amazon Parrots, are very susceptible to obesity if not fed correctly and allowed too little room to exercise. Parrot cages that are roomy as well as interesting and innovative are the best bet for any bird.

If your parrot is newborn or very young, make sure to find out how big it will be when it is fully grown. Even if your bird is very small now, buy a cage which is suited for his adult size. This will avoid you having to buy two parrot cages because your baby bird is now a rather big boy.

Next, you should consider the type of door latch on your cage. Remember that parrots are very intelligent birds. Many owners have found out the hard way that their birds are quite capable of finding a way to unlatch the cage door and escape. Parrot cages should have locks that are very difficult to unlock or your cage will be nothing more than an elaborate table decoration!

Lastly, if your parrot is a stranger to you and your family, you may want to consider a cage that has an area where your bird can retreat if it feels shy or threatened. This space can help your parrot become accustomed to his new surroundings and give him a place where he can feel comfortable until he is ready to join the family. Parrot cages with exclusion areas are also useful if you are thinking of breeding with your birds.

Considering the above guidelines when buying parrot cages should help you to find a good home for your bird. Since these are the absolute minimum requirements there is plenty of scope to add as many enhancements to your bird's cage as possible. Just like us, parrots have feelings too and we all know there is no place like a comfortable and secure home. Good luck with your new feathered friend!
