Different Types of Parrots

There are many different types of parrots and some seem to have little in common. There are small parrots, big parrots, colorful parrots and plain parrots. There are parrots with outgoing personalities and parrots with shy personalities. But one thing almost all parrots need is love and attention. Here we examine some popular parrots to get you started in your understanding of these 'flying rainbows'.

Macaws are intelligent, outgoing and intriguing birds. They can however be problematic pets due to their stubborn personalities. They are one of the types of parrots known to be good talkers. Screaming, biting and chewing are all behaviors that come naturally to the Macaw so new owners will need to be patient and learn to understand their bird. They are very big birds with correspondingly big beaks and should never be left alone with children.

Conures are friendly, playful birds who seldom fight with each other. They are especially well-known for their very boisterous natures. However they do have their own individual personalities and are one of the more stubborn types of parrots. Conures are well-known for being very noisy birds. They live for about 30 to 40 years.

African grays are types of parrots that are considered to be the most intelligent species in the world. They don't have a call or scream of their own but will copy those of other birds and have excellent talking ability. The African grey is a very sensitive bird that will intuitively pick up on their owner's feelings. They must be kept in an optimal environment of they tend to develop feather plucking habits or other destructive behaviors.

Cockatoos are types of parrots that make challenging pets for the most part. They like to be cuddled and bond with their human owners, seeing them as mates. They tend to develop separation anxiety if kept away from their primary caregiver. Cockatoos are very loud birds and need plenty of attention. They can be unpredictable, especially during the breeding season. New owners should do their homework.

Parakeets are types of parrots that come in many different varieties and colors. The word parakeets means 'small parrots'.

Cockatiels are types of parrots that are an ideal 'starter parrot'. This means they are perfect for the novice bird owner. They are easy to care for and require very little specialist knowledge. They tend to be cheerful birds.

Budgies are types of parrots which originate from Australia. They are gentle yet outgoing birds who love to entertain if given the chance. Budgies are small birds that make a lot of noise so if you value quiet time, get a fish. Budgies can live for ten to fifteen years. Budgies and cockatiels can be housed together as they gt on quite well together. Lovebirds are another small parrot which should be kept separately as they can be quite aggressive.

Parrotlets are very small types of parrots that have very big perconalities. Novice bird owners should not be tempted to keep one as a pet.
